After the Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva signed a provisional measure of betting ban in the country on September 25, 141% increase was identified in creating illegal platforms.
The Bet Legal platform reported that nearly 415 new illegal betting sites were opened after the publication of the provisional measure prohibiting gambling in Brazil.
As of 6 p.m. on Friday, at the time of Lula’s announcement regarding the cessation of online gaming, there were already 295 illegal web domains that were discovered. 294 illegal online gambling sites were established just on Saturday. The figure thus rose to 710 sites as of 7:10 p.m. on Sunday, amounting to a 141% increase in a span of two days.
The National Association of Games and Lotteries (ANJL) stated:
Without authorisation, without the same regulatory obligations and operating outside the scope of oversight, the clandestine market continues to find space.
ANJL President Plínio Lemos Jorge said:
The clandestine websites have expanded their offerings and continue to operate outside the law and oversight. Now, they will take advantage of the prohibition of legal betting to attract bettors to the illegal market.
According to the ANJL, the government does not only keep billions away from the budget but also compels more than 30 million gamblers to play on illegal websites.
Just after the Provisional Measure 1,394 was put into force, the the Ministries of Justice and Finance blocked 506 illegal operators websites.
