ACMA blocks more illegal gambling sites

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has intensified its crackdown on illegal online gambling by requesting ISPs to block additional websites, including Crown Slots and Billy Billion.

The action follows investigations confirming these sites violated the Interactive Gambling Act 2001. Website blocking is one of several measures ACMA uses to protect consumers from unlicensed gambling services.

Since November 2019, 1,178 illegal gambling and affiliate websites have been blocked, while stricter regulations since 2017 have led to approximately 220 operators exiting the Australian market. ACMA warns that unlicensed platforms lack player protections, putting users at risk of financial losses with limited recourse.

ACMA maintains a public register of licensed wagering services, allowing users to verify whether an operator is authorized to offer gambling services in Australia.

The ACMA website also provides resources for identifying illegal gambling platforms and submitting complaints against suspected unlicensed operators.

This enforcement action follows ACMA’s recent investigation into Network Ten (Sydney) for broadcasting gambling advertisements during the 2024 Australia Formula 1 Grand Prix, which breached the Australian Commercial TV Code of Practice.
