Following a probe into breaches of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has mandated six more illegal online gambling sites be blocked by Australian internet service providers.
Play Jonny, ACO96, TCL99, Waboom77, Wonaco and WooSpin now join many others as being blocked from access.
The regulator has stated that website blocking will continue as one of the ACMA’s key enforcement tools to combat illegal offshore gambling activities that target Australian consumers. Since the first blocking order was issued by the ACMA in November 2019, there have been a total of 1,708 illegal gambling and affiliate websites blocked throughout Australia.
Additionally, the authority states that there have been over 230 unlicensed gambling operators no longer active in the Australian market since the introduction of strengthened enforcement measures in 2017.
For Australians using unlicensed operators, their risk lies with the lack of consumer safeguards and getting their funds backed to them or compensated for not being able to access player protection. Therefore it is encouraged for consumers to verify if the betting operator is licensed to operate within Australia via the ACMA’s register of licensed providers.
Details regarding online gambling, consumer protection, and filing complaints are available through the ACMA’s official channels.
