Argentina blocks access to online betting on public networks

Municipality of Castelli in Buenos Aires province declared itself the first and only institution to prohibit surfing of online gambling websites through its internet connection in Argentina.

This new law approved by mayor Francisco Echarren envisages forbidding access to gambling websites from all official connections such as those being used in schools, government offices and free Wi-Fi spots. Moreover, the municipality has to launch information campaigns about dangers of gambling for children.

Mayor Echarren stated:

While Milei reduces funding for prevention and supports the development of the online gambling industry, in Castelli, we draw a line. Four out of ten young people have already placed bets using their mobile phones. They start gambling at the age of 13. While some people ignore the issue, we take action.

In order to make restrictions work, Castelli is going to collaborate with local internet provider Cooperativa CUECCA that will block gambling sites as well as contact educational organizations to implement precautions and initiatives aimed at education.

Such measures were taken by Castelli in the light of national discussion about youth gambling. As mayor Echarren has said earlier, Castelli wants to protect youth since there are many kids who start gambling at a very young age.
