Armenia to fine the use of gambling-related terms without a license

The revenue authority in Armenia has announced that, effective February 8, 2027, no business will be able to use gaming terminology such as gambling, casino, lottery, or betting premises in its business name, trademark, or website domain unless it holds a gambling license.

The ban covers eight specific terms in Armenian. Each violation will result in a fine of approximately $1,380. However, companies with the proper license may continue using terminology related to their license type.

For example, a company with a sports betting license will be eligible to call its business a sports betting house.

This measure is closely connected to measures taking effect on the same date, such as requiring telecoms to ban unlicensed gambling websites under an updated daily list and restricting advertising and payment activities related to unlicensed gambling businesses.

Deputy committee chairman Rafael Gevorgyan stated:

While we’re blocking, say, 50 websites, by the time it’s completed, the relevant organisations have already created another 50 websites, which must undergo the same process again.

This law allows people to voluntarily bar themselves from all online gambling games for a five-year period. It also limits gambling to no more than 20% of annual income and prohibits gambling for people on social benefits, pensioners with no other income, and those in bankruptcy.

Moreover, a new law on player protection will come into force on January 1, 2027.
