With a new government taking office and the tender for online casino licenses underway, Austria is poised to end its long-standing gambling monopoly and open its online market.
Industry stakeholders suggest that 2025 could mark the end of Austria’s online casino monopoly, allowing multiple private operators to enter the market. This would enable full licensing of online casino products like slots and table games for the first time.
It could also resolve ongoing legal disputes involving operators active under a Maltese license. With the 15-year license for Casinos Austria set to expire on September 30, 2027, authorities are expected to begin the tender process this year. Experts view this as a key opportunity for opening Austria’s online gambling market
Simon Priglinger-Simader, the vice president of the Austrian Betting and Gaming Association, mentioned:
We are in a very interesting time at the moment, because it’s the first time for five or more years that politicians have been open to talk to us and are considering a reform and move away from the monopoly system. Now is the time, the now or never time, to act. If they want to move away from a monopoly, they will need to start preparing everything in 2025.
