Belgium expands crackdown on illegal gambling websites and networks

Belgium has stepped up its fight against illegal gambling websites by introducing a broad enforcement system that targets not only the operators themselves, but also the digital infrastructure supporting them.

Under the new framework, Belgium’s Federal Public Service (FPS) Economy can require multiple intermediary services to block or cut ties with unlicensed gambling platforms. This includes internet service providers, content delivery networks, search engines, social media companies, domain registrars, and DNS providers.

The new system applies pressure at several levels. Internet providers must block access to blacklisted gambling websites, while companies such as Cloudflare may be required to stop providing services to those sites. Search engines can also be ordered to remove links to illegal operators, and platforms like Meta must prevent gambling ads from appearing.

In addition, domain registrars may suspend or revoke domains connected to illegal gambling, while DNS providers are expected to stop users from bypassing restrictions through alternative services.

Authorities said intermediaries have five working days to comply after receiving notice. Failure to cooperate could result in fines of up to €500,000 per violation.

Belgium’s Gaming Commission continues to oversee the regulated market, while the Business Court of Brussels now has broader powers to issue blocking orders against both operators and companies supporting their services.

According to Paul Laurent of the Belgian Anti-Online Piracy & Illegal Gambling Office, dozens of gambling websites have already been blocked under the strengthened system.
