Fred and Peter Done are the brothers behind Betfred, and now they are the top taxpayers in the UK, having paid a staggering 400.1 million in total tax.
For the first time, the brothers led the latest Sunday Times Tax List while bet365’s Denise, John, and Peter Coates, after giving 227.1 million to the authorities, were the fifth biggest taxpayers in the UK.
The new rankings have been published as the UK gambling industry is anticipating the enforcement of new tax increases.
While Betfred’s chain of physical betting shops will not be impacted as the retail rate will stay the same, the increase of the online gambling tax from 21 percent to 40 percent will be a blow to Betfred and many others.
According to the Sunday Times article, Betfred’s high street shops have paid nearly 200 million in gambling duty in 2024 and 25, and this is just their business rates which were 14 million.
