Betsson withdraws Kansspelautoriteit licence application

Betsson has recently unveiled its decision to cancel its Kansspelautoriteit license application because of the substantial postponement in the approval process.

To bring online gambling services to the country, the business had been pursuing the license via its subsidiaries. However, the operator’s Q2 report, which was made public on July 20, states that it has now chosen to discontinue the application.

The main reason behind this decision is the crucial postpones experienced during the licensing process. Furthermore, the business analyzed the potential in other areas with promising and alluring project pipelines before allocating resources there. Consequently, Betsson opted to focus its efforts on these alternative opportunities instead of continuing to pursue the Dutch online gambling license.

Betsson has indicated that it may consider applying again for the license at a later time.

The company has been absent from the Netherlands for nearly 2 years after withdrawing its operations from the country in September 2021, just one day before the authorized iGaming market was launched. This action was part of a larger pattern among wellknown companies that made the choice to leave the market as a result of a tardy policy update that made it clear that operators getting passive Dutch bets were still inclined to a cooling off.

Betsson expressed hope at the time of its departure that this move would open the door for the eventual comeback to the nation’s legal gambling sector.

Operators suggesting iGaming products and services having no proper license may face strict measures from the regulatory body, Kansspelautoriteit. This could have implications on their ability to submit and obtain future license applications to work within the Dutch market in a licit way.
