Curaçao Gaming Authority shuts down portal after cyberattack

In the news release issued on 7 October, the Curaçao Gaming Authority has informed that its online gaming portal will be shut down, while maintaining the validity of its existing licenses.

The latest news from the Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA) reveals that it has decided not to restore the online gaming portal that was hacked last month in the “Casino Secrets” data breach, and is now switching to a new platform to continue with its licensing activities.

The security breach exposed sensitive documents and ownership details of several gambling companies licensed under the Curaçao gaming law. White-hat hacker Lilith Wittmann has warned that the authority has been hacked into and that extensive access was gained to its database and systems.

The CGA has stated that it is taking into account the need to transition from the existing platform while ensuring continuity of its functions as a regulator.

The authority stated:

The discontinuation of the portal does not affect the validity of existing licenses, the obligations of licensed operators, or the CGA’s ongoing regulatory and supervisory responsibilities.

Licensing, compliance and supervision activities will continue through alternative arrangements while an interim solution is introduced.

The CGA added:

Given that the availability of the current digital seal will be affected, the CGA will shortly introduce an alternative mechanism through which operators can demonstrate that a domain is licensed by the CGA. The CGA also continues its efforts in response to the unauthorized access incident, including containment of the data leak, and remains focused on protecting the integrity of its regulatory functions and information assets. We recognize that this transition may create challenges for operators and appreciate their cooperation and understanding during this period.

The authority has not announced a specific date for the replacement platform’s launch. In the meantime, it says its regulatory responsibilities will continue through alternative arrangements.
