DraftKings introduces transaction fee in Illinois

DraftKings has revealed plans to implement a 50-cent fee on every mobile and online wager placed in Illinois beginning 1 September 2025.

The move follows recent tax hikes on sports betting approved by Illinois lawmakers, which the company says have substantially increased its tax obligations in the state over the past two years.

DraftKings explained that the per-bet fee is designed to help counterbalance the added tax pressure. The company also noted that it would eliminate the fee if the legislation is reversed.

Jason Robins, DraftKings CEO and Co-Founder, commented:

We are disappointed that Illinois policymakers have chosen to more than triple our tax rate over the past two years and we are very concerned about what this will do to the legal, regulated industry. Meanwhile, Illinois continues to fuel the rapidly growing illegal industry, which pays no taxes or fees and provides none of the consumer protections that regulated operators offer.

DraftKings affirms its commitment to working collaboratively on policies that promote a sustainable industry, support state revenue goals, and protect consumers. The company also highlighted its ongoing investments in responsible gaming as part of its broader approach to regulatory engagement.

Illinois joins a growing number of U.S. states that have recently revised their gambling tax systems, leading operators to re-evaluate their pricing models and cost structures.

DraftKings’ decision to introduce a per-bet fee is among the first by a regulated operator directly responding to increased tax pressures through individual wager charges.
