The French gambling regulator, the Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), has announced a new partnership with the Federation for the Fight against Addiction.
The aim of this step is to strengthen the prevention of excessive gambling and the protection of minors through joint action.
There will be four main areas: research in the field of prevention and support, the development of tools to support players or addiction specialists, the development of training programmes and the joint organisation of events. The partnership will include joint training events and the publication of a document on gambling regulation for addiction specialists.
In 2019, the French Gaming Observatory estimated the number of at-risk players at 1.4 million, of which almost 400,000 are at pathological levels. This means that problem gambling generates more than 38 percent of the sector’s turnover. In its strategic plan for 2024/2026, the ANJ has identified reducing this figure as one of its priorities.
This week, ANJ reported that licensed betting volume in France totalled €5.2 billion in the first half of the year, up 24% year-on-year. Gross gaming revenue (GGR) was up 16% to €871 million. Online betting was up 10% to €1.3 billion, while the number of active online bettors’ accounts grew 13% year-on-year to 2 million in June.
The growth in June was particularly strong, likely due to Euro 2024. However, the amount bet on the Euro was slightly below ANJ’s €1 billion forecast, at just €650 million. By comparison, €900 million was wagered during the previous tournament in 2021.
