Greece files lawsuit against 18 influencers

Greece files criminal lawsuit against 18 influencers for promoting illegal gambling.

The complaints were announced by the Minister of National Economy and Finance Kyriakos Pierrakakis said on 6 October. During the Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) briefing the Minister mentioned that the cases are now at the preliminary investigation stage.

The investigation mentions 18 influencers with 3.6 million followers combined, for promoting 11 illegal websites of 8 providers.

Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said:

The message in every direction must be the same: the internet is not a jungle. Popularity offers no immunity, and influence carries responsibility. Anyone who uses their power and reach to promote illegal gambling must know that they will be identified, scrutinised, and face the consequences provided for by law.

According to Pierrakakis, EEEP is now leveraging innovative technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) in tracing illegal networks.

The newly introduced instruments facilitate searching for illegal websites and the channels that promote them. The involvement of Hellenic Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) and internet access providers makes it possible to block these websites in a short period.
