Indian authorities have blocked access to 242 additional illegal betting platforms, expanding their ongoing efforts as part of a campaign to enforce the country’s Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act (PROGA).
The latest action brings the total number of banned websites to nearly 7,800, reflecting the ongoing fight against unauthorized gambling activities.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and other law enforcement partners have issued blocking orders as part of a coordinated initiative to restrict the entry of unauthorized online betting operators. These measures aim to protect consumers and reinforce compliance with Indian law, which does not currently recognise most real-money online gambling services.
Officials said the blocked sites include a mix of foreign bookmakers, social betting platforms with unauthorized betting options, and proxy entry points designed to circumvent previous bans. The expanded list is expected to disrupt service to tens of thousands of users attempting to access these services from within India.
Lawmakers and digital regulators said the aggressive blocking campaign demonstrates the government’s commitment to tackling illegal online betting ahead of expected legislative updates that could clarify and strengthen India’s approach to regulating skill-based and real-money gaming formats.
