The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has ended its investigation regarding Google’s anti-competitive behavior towards real-money gaming (RMG) apps due to new legislation changing the market conditions relevant for this case.
The case was launched after a complaint by WinZO Games, an Indian gaming company, that filed a complaint against Google in 2022, claiming that the company was abusing its monopoly by using the Play Store and Google Ads.
According to WinZO Games, Google’s RMG initiative allowed only certain types of games, such as daily fantasy games or rummy, while forbidding other types of real-money games.
During the investigation, Google expressed willingness to include skill-based RMG games in compliance with regulations, but the Indian legislation changed instantaneously.
It also has to be noted that Google began the process of closure of its RMG initiative and started to reject advertisements starting from January 2026. The complaint by WinZO still has been revoked on the 25th of August 2026.
According to CCI, merely revoking the complaint does not require it to stop the investigation, so it has to assess whether the investigation has to continue.
For now, the regulatory overhaul has effectively removed the remedy at the centre of the dispute.
