Indonesia arrests 321 foreigners in illegal online gambling raid

321 foreigners arrested by Indonesian police for illegal online gambling operation in Jakarta’s police crackdown as part of Indonesia’s overall anti-gambling crime effort against international cybercriminal syndicates.

Police operations conducted on May 7, at a Jakarta building, discovered an active illegal online gambling business with foreign customers outside of Indonesia.

According to police spokesperson Wira Satya Triputra, 321 people were arrested, including 228 Vietnamese; 57 from China; 11 from Laos; 5 from Thailand; 3 from Cambodia; and 3 from Malaysia; 275 of the individuals arrested are currently under investigation for gambling-related crimes and 46 suspects are continuing to be processed for their involvement in the illegal gambling operation.

Initial investigations determined this online gambling network had been operational for approximately 2 months prior to the execution of police’s operation.

While the international gambling network was targeting players outside of Indonesia, the authorities have declined to provide the countries impacted.

As gambling is illegal in Indonesia and penalties are assessed against the operators and punters, as well as publication or merchandising or advertising of gambling websites, authorities feel the pressure to enforce their laws against illegal gambling.
