Ireland launches investigation into Polymarket bets in Dublin by-elections

Irish financial and gaming authorities have launched an investigation into unusual betting on Polymarket, which now exceeds election betting and includes money laundering and opaque crypto flows.

Recently, The Irish Times published a report examining betting activity related to the Dublin Central by-election. The report draws attention to the activities of certain accounts on prediction market platforms that placed bets against candidate Gerry Hutch. The report notes enough unusual trading patterns to make one wonder whether the market is actually being used for its original purposes.

The report did not mention anything about whether any of the candidates or Gerry Hutch himself participated in this type of betting activities.

Based on this report and unusual betting activity on prediction market platforms, Irish Finance Minister Simon Harris has ordered officials to launch an investigative investigation.

The concern in the government can be split into two separate tracks. One question is if prediction markets that operate via cryptocurrency will fall under gambling regulations, while the second is more serious because it investigates if loosely regulated betting sites will create avenues for money laundering or hiding other financial activity.

Harris places this issue within the context of international changes in betting markets on the internet, particularly with regard to cryptocurrencies and off-shore betting. Increasingly, European policymakers are becoming uncomfortable with where these prediction markets fit into the gambling, financial speculation, and unregulated derivative trading spaces.

This pressure has been developing in the EU for several months.
