Macau’s gaming sector posted its strongest monthly performance since January 2020, with MOP 21.19 billion ($2.62 billion) in gross gaming revenue (GGR) in May 2025, according to the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ).
The figure marks a 5% year-on-year increase and surpasses the previous post-pandemic peak set in October 2024.
The surge was largely driven by the Labour Day Golden Week (May 1-5), which brought in nearly 850,000 visitors, significantly boosting casino activity. Estimates suggest daily GGR may have topped MOP 1 billion during the holiday period.
Another major contributor was the soft launch of Capella Macau, a luxury hotel within Galaxy Macau, which reportedly boosted VIP turnover by 25-30%. Analysts also noted higher VIP win rates of 3.5-3.7%, helping push average daily GGR to MOP 700 million for the month.
Despite May’s strong results, year-to-date GGR totals MOP 97.7 billion, up just 1.7% from the same period in 2024. The monthly average of MOP 19.54 billion remains below the MOP 20 billion target needed to hit the government’s full-year forecast of MOP 240 billion. Compared to 2019, the current total stands at 77.7% of pre-Covid levels.
May’s 12.4% growth over April extended a three-month streak of improvement. Industry observers expect further gains ahead of October’s National Day Golden Week, as Macau continues to outpace other global gaming hubs like Las Vegas, which saw a revenue dip in Q1 2025
