Malta proposes safe AI use principles for gambling industry

The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has launched a public consultation on a draft charter focused on the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence in the gambling industry.

The document was prepared in cooperation with the Malta Digital Innovation Authority and is intended to complement existing legal and regulatory frameworks, including the European Union’s AI Act, while addressing the specific needs of the gambling sector.

MGA CEO Charles Mizzi previously explained that AI is already widely used by operators for customer support, fraud detection, marketing and risk management.

According to Mizzi, the industry now needs clearer guidance on how these technologies should be applied responsibly.

The regulator noted that while AI creates new opportunities for the gambling sector, it also introduces risks. As part of the proposed charter, the MGA is encouraging operators to focus on transparency in AI systems, data protection, human oversight in key decision-making, regular testing of algorithms for errors, and stronger supervision of technology providers.
