Following complaints from the public about illegal activity on March 20, multiple search operations were held at various addresses across Kaungmu Tong, Taw Yawt and Suan Saw wards where suspects were located and equipment associated with online gambling and fraud were seized.

Investigation of the large network used to operate the local gambling and fraud operations uncovered extensive technical infrastructure. Along with the seizure of 286 mobile phones from Kaungmu Tong Ward, 30 computers, 28 laptops, 46 mobile phones, and 18 gambling-related devices were seized from Taw Yawt Ward, and 85 mobile phones and 10 computers were seized from Suan Saw Ward.

The operation is part of an ongoing campaign by the Myanmar government to combat online fraud, as well as illegal online gambling in border regions such as Muse, which has become a major centre for transnational crime.

Authorities are also working closely with regional partners and international organisations to disrupt these networks by taking down their operational infrastructure.

According to officials, continuing to combat fraud and illegal online gambling will be a top priority for the government going forward. The speed with which the government is acting in response to local intelligence and enhancing enforcement capacity is exemplary of this promise.
