New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez files a lawsuit against prediction market operator Kalshi. He accuses Kalshi for offering online sports betting in the state without obeying any local gambling laws.
According to Torrez, Kalshi is accepting sports-related wagers and is not operating within New Mexico’s regulated framework. State officials note that legal gambling must be done under New Mexico’s laws and have a license.
Moreover, the lawsuit notes how Kalshi is bypassing the safeguards needed for a licensed gambling operator, which address problem gambling and provide gamer security.
This is followed by a separate lawsuit filed by the Pojoaque, Sandia, and Isleta pueblos, along with the Mescalero Apache Tribe, last month. Those entities claim that Kalshi’s sports event contracts often violate agreements and federal laws.
This case is another addition to a growing number of legal challenges that Kalshi is facing. Tribal groups continue to question whether sports-related prediction contracts continue working under federal and gambling laws.
