SkyCity Entertainment Group and Bet365 are among several gambling firms facing coordinated legal action in New Zealand, with multiple cases now before the High Court in Auckland.
Three related cases have been filed against operators including Bet365, Super Group, and SkyCity, with overlapping plaintiffs and similar legal arguments. Justice Ian Gault has allowed the cases to proceed separately for now and granted interim name suppression for plaintiffs.
The claims draw on several laws, including the Gambling Act and Fair Trading Act, and target offshore platforms accepting bets from New Zealand players.
Bet365, led by CEO Denise Coates, is challenging the court’s jurisdiction. Meanwhile, SkyCity faces a potential class action linked to its Malta-based online operations, which it denies liability for.
Super Group, which operates brands like Betway, is also named, with multiple entities involved in the case.
The legal action follows new rules introduced in June 2025 that ban offshore operators from serving New Zealand customers. These cases are expected to test how strictly those laws can be enforced—and could reshape how global betting companies operate in the market.
