South Korean game maker WeMade, known for its Legends of Mir series, is planning to further expand in the iGaming sector through its subsidiary Play Links.
According to a report by South Korean media outlet Biz Tribune, The company has disclosed that its plan is to aggressively target the international markets this year with slot-themed social media games being among the first initiatives.
The developer has so far launched five slot-themed games and is gearing up for a major slot launch along with new card-based gambling games.
Play Links is one of the companies under WeMade’s WeMade Play group that focuses on social media games. WeMade Play is a very well-known brand in South Korea mainly due to its chat platform games, Anipang and Aqua Story, on KakaoTalk.
Play Links has just started exploring the iGaming field by releasing five social media slots games that reportedly attracted more than a million daily users. However, the company said that the upcoming launch will be its biggest iGaming rollout to date. It also gave a sneak peek into a game named Slotopolis where users can collect items.
The business will not confine itself to online slots alone but will also extend its range of iGaming formats. It expressed a plan to “diversify its genres” by adding card and puzzle games with competitive elements. The new range is expected to be launched in the third quarter of the fiscal year.
Play Links CEO, Seok Jeong-won, newly appointed, predicted that the company is on the right track to making a name for itself in the market this year and thereby generating real sales figures.
According to South Korean regulations, gaming titles that allow real-money betting and withdrawals are not allowed. Nevertheless, Play Links announced that its primary focus is on the iGaming markets of Europe and North America, which have a combined market value of approximately $100 billion. The company further stated that it plans to lead mid- to long-term growth by delivering slot games through partnerships with licensed distributors.
The Legends of Mir series of role-playing games created a huge buzz in Asia around the mid-2010s, especially in China. After that, WeMade transitioned into the blockchain and crypto gaming fields and launched its own cryptocurrency called WEMIX. The company has even gone as far as organizing major women’s golf events in South Korea where the winnings in crypto are given instead of traditional cash.
Last month, 23 people in Busan, South Korea, who are thought to be at the core of a $1.4 billion illegal gambling ring, were arrested by the police. Police have revealed that the gang’s illicit operation generated around $2.5 million in illegal winnings.
