Sportingbet wants Sportingwin to stop operating under its domain

Entain’s Sportingbet has filed a lawsuit in the Malta Civil Court, demanding that Bulgarian online betting operator Sportingwin stop operating under a brand it believes infringes its trademark.

Sportingbet filed an EU trademark in 2017, while Sportingwin registered its name as a trademark in 2020.

The brands operate in different markets, but Entain filed a complaint last year in the Czech Republic, arguing that Sportingwin was “visually identical” to its own trademarks. Entain lost the case, but is now trying again in Malta.

Entain says it wants to protect its brand from “overshadowing and bias,” according to the lawsuit. However, the court overturned its initial approval of Entain’s request. Sportingwin has filed a complaint seeking compensation as a result of the interim measure. The case is set for October.

Entain’s Sportingbet is one of six operators that have applied for online gambling licenses in Brazil ahead of the opening of the regulated market, which is expected in January 2025.
