The Star Sydney will continue to be under regulatory management until June 2027 as the NSW Independent Casino Commission extended the appointment of its manager and gave the casino more time for remediation work.
The NSW Independent Casino Commission (NICC) has decided not to lift the suspension of The Star Sydney’s casino licence. Nick Weeks will continue as manager until 30 June 2027.
The Star Sydney will continue to operate despite the licence suspension. The casino licence was suspended in October 2022, following the first Bell Review.
Star continues to face financial and operational challenges in the process of implementing reforms and restoring the business. CEO Bruce Mathieson Jr, who took the role in December, is leading the company’s turnaround plan.
In Queensland, the intended suspension of The Star Gold Coast’s casino license for a period of 90 days has been delayed until 31 March 2027. Initially slated to commence on 30 September 2026, the Queensland Government made a decision following counsel from Special Manager Nicholas Weeks in addition to an evaluation of the progress made in remediating the casino.
The extensions in NSW and Queensland mean Star’s Australian casino operations will remain under regulatory oversight into 2027.
