Svenska Spel has permanently closed Casino Cosmopol in Stockholm, effective immediately, after the Swedish Parliament decided to end all land-based casino operations by 31 December 2025.
The decision follows updated ownership directives received on 24 April. Remaining land-based casinos will now be phased out according to the new guidelines.
Around 240 employees are impacted. Discussions with trade unions have started, and a career fair will be held in Stockholm, similar to previous events in Malmö and Gothenburg.
Casino Cosmopol operated under a government monopoly. Its closure required an official amendment to the ownership instructions, which has now been finalized following union consultations. Earlier closures include Sundsvall in 2020, and Gothenburg and Malmö in February 2024.
Ola Enquist, the CEO of Casino Cosmopol, mentioned:
We have initiated union dialogue about the closure so that it will be as good as possible for everyone. Just as we did with the closures in Malmö and Gothenburg, we will organise a career fair for our employees in Stockholm with several invited companies.
Anna Johnson, the President and CEO of Svenska Spel, added:
For over 20 years, Casino Cosmopol has offered an international casino experience to guests from all over the world.
