Swedish authority warns of rising youth gambling trends

The Swedish Gambling Authority‘s latest report highlights a growing trend of gambling among minors and young adults in Sweden.

The Swedish Gambling Authority’s report, submitted to the government as part of the 2024 appropriation bill, investigates the factors driving youth gambling and its funding sources.

The study primarily examines young adults aged 18–24 while also referencing underage gambling data from the Central Association for Alcohol and Drug Information (CAN).

Findings indicate a rise in gambling among minors, with young men showing a particularly high engagement. Key contributing factors include the growing presence of lottery-like mechanics in video games, such as loot boxes and skin gambling.

Additionally, social media marketing, influencer promotions, and casino streaming have amplified gambling interest among young people.

The report reveals that young adults fund their gambling primarily through student loans and wages, but an increasing number—especially men aged 23 – 24, and those with gambling control issues, are turning to high-cost loans.

Separately, the Swedish Gambling Authority is investigating concerns over a potential data breach related to the Spelpaus self-exclusion register. Some users reported receiving marketing from unlicensed operators despite being registered. However, the authority denies any data leaks and continues its inquiry.
