Turkey opposition proposes overhaul of gambling law framework

Turkey’s main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP), has introduced a proposal to fundamentally revise the country’s gambling legislation, calling for broader reform of the regulatory framework governing games of chance.

The initiative seeks to modernize the current legal structure and respond to enforcement challenges in the nation’s gambling sector.

Under the proposed reform, the CHP aims to expand legal definitions and update regulations to address the rise of unregulated gambling activity, enhance oversight mechanisms, and clarify licensing criteria for both land-based and digital operators. Party members argued that existing laws are outdated and have failed to sufficiently protect consumers or curb illegal gambling practices.

The proposal also includes provisions intended to strengthen consumer safeguards and increase transparency in how gambling activities are monitored and enforced. Opposition lawmakers have urged for more robust consumer protection measures and stricter compliance standards to mitigate harm associated with unauthorized gambling.

CHP representatives emphasized that reforming the gambling framework could create a more effective and equitable regulatory system, while critics have warned that any overhaul must balance regulation with economic and social considerations. The proposal is expected to prompt debate in parliament as stakeholders assess its potential impact on the industry.
