Two people have been arrested after a coordinated raid on an unlicensed gambling venue on Chester Road in Manchester city centre.
The operation happened on May 28 by Greater Manchester Police’s City of Manchester team with the UK Gambling Commission and Manchester City Council’s licensing officials.
A 33-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman were arrested under the Gambling Act 2005 and the Licensing Act 2003.
During the raid, officers discovered gambling tables, chips, cash, and mobile phones. Police note that their aim is to shut down illegal gambling operations.
PC Nial Vivian notes that illegal gambling leads to other issues, such as money laundering. Such venues must be identified and closed.
The Gambling Commission has confirmed its involvement in the operation with the executive director of operations, Sue Young. They consider catching illegal gambling a key priority, and the agency will closely work with the police.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has launched a task force targeting illegal operators that is supported by £24.5 million in government funding.
Regulators have enforced action in recent years, as there are concerns about unlicensed gambling venues.
Under UK law, gambling operators must have a licence and obey requirements about consumer protections.
