YouTube is expanding its Hype creator amplification feature while also tightening its policies on gambling-related content to limit exposure for younger users.
Hype, YouTube’s system for boosting viewer-voted content from rising creators, was first introduced in September. The feature allows users to allocate “Hype Points” to videos from emerging channels, helping them gain more visibility. Each user gets a set number of points per week, creating a new way to support up-and-coming creators.
YouTube is gradually rolling out Hype to more regions. Last week, it began testing paid Hype Points in Turkey, and now, creators in Brazil can manage both regular and paid Hype via Studio Mobile on Android. Previously, this was only available on Studio web, so the mobile expansion adds more flexibility for creators. YouTube plans to continue expanding Hype in the coming months.
New Gambling Content Restrictions
YouTube is also updating its policies on gambling-related content to further restrict its promotion, particularly for younger audiences.
Starting March 19, 2025, YouTube will enforce stricter rules on online gambling promotions. Currently, it prohibits directing viewers to uncertified gambling sites or apps, but the updated policy will extend to:
- URLs, embedded links, and text references
- Logos and visual displays
- Verbal mentions of gambling platforms
- Content promising guaranteed returns, even if the site is Google-approved
Additionally, YouTube will age-restrict gambling-related content that doesn’t violate its guidelines but still features online casinos or gambling apps. This means such content—excluding online sports betting and in-person gambling—will only be viewable to signed-in users over 18.
With gambling promotions becoming a dominant part of sports coverage, these updates could help limit exposure and better protect younger audiences.
