The Interactive Gambling Amendment (Know Your Losses Activity Statement) Bill 2025, introduced by MP Rebekha Sharkie on February 10, seeks to mandate real-time loss tracking on betting apps.
Operators would be required to display users’ net losses continuously via a permanent banner that cannot be minimized or hidden.
The legislation aims to combat Australia’s high gambling losses, which reached A$32bn (€19.3bn) in 2022/23, the highest per capita globally. Under the proposed law, betting platforms must show three key figures at all times: net losses for the current month, the calendar year, and all-time losses or wins.
To ensure visibility, this data must be displayed in at least 10-point font throughout the betting experience. Non-compliant companies could face hefty penalties, including 500 penalty units per day for criminal violations and 750 for civil breaches, with corporate fines multiplied by five.
Sharkie emphasized that the reform would require minimal government enforcement while preventing financial devastation among young gamblers. The bill provides a six-month transition period for operators to comply.
Currently, gambling operators only provide monthly activity statements upon user request. This bill follows the 2022 Murphy Report, which called for strict gambling reforms, including an advertising ban – though the Albanese Government has delayed action until after the May 2025 election, frustrating campaigners.
