Leading technology companies have pledged to support Brazil’s betting regulator in tackling illegal gambling and removing unlicensed betting content from their platforms.
The partnership, formalized on July 3 at the Ministry of Finance in Brasília, establishes direct communication between the Secretariat of Prizes and Bets (SPA) and digital platforms, allowing for faster reporting and removal of content that breaches Brazilian law.
The Digital Council – comprising eight major tech firms including Google, Meta, TikTok, Kwai, and Amazon – is participating in the initiative.
SPA president Regis Dudena emphasized the significance of this move, noting that since the Ministry began overseeing betting activities, cooperation with the digital sector has become increasingly important. He described the agreement as a necessary step forward in regulating Brazil’s fixed-odds betting market.
The partnership aims to enhance efforts to detect and eliminate unlawful gambling content while reinforcing child protection standards in the online space. Felipe França, executive director of the Digital Council, stressed that effective regulation in the digital era depends on collaboration, technical expertise, and ongoing dialogue.
This move also responds to SPA’s key challenge of countering illegal betting sites and their promotional efforts.
Additionally, the Ministry of Finance has signed a Technical Cooperation Agreement with the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services to speed up the development of Sigap, Brazil’s main betting oversight system. The 18-month agreement will involve hiring four temporary staff via Startup Gov.br to support the platform, which handles licensing and data for regulated betting operators.
