Buenos Aires has introduced a new bill that aims to implement stricter rules related to online betting advertisements while enforcing a number of other proposals related to protecting minors from services linked to gambling.
The legislation has been proposed by provincial deputy Alejandra Lorden. It has been proposed around the same time period when the Province established the Commission on Gambling, Lottery and Gambling Addiction Prevention.
Lorden said:
The bill seeks to neutralize conditioning mechanisms that take advantage of the emotional vulnerabilities of adolescents, by banning those advertising techniques which are meant to create an association between consumption and social success.
The bill contains not only stricter advertising requirements but also initiatives that aim to promote the prevention of gambling addiction such as school programs aimed at detecting gambling addiction in young people, assessing the psychosocial state of individuals, and creating the Provincial Young People’s Mental Health Fund.
One of the most important points of the bill is banning the advertisements of gambling, alcohol, and tobacco products in educational institutions, sports facilities and hospitals within 300 meters from these establishments.Gambling websites would have to provide their platforms with an age determination algorithm that will block advertising aimed at young people.
Another provision of the law is related to gambling companies being prohibited from carrying out advertisements at sports events where people who are younger than 18 years old participate.
According to the new law, the companies participating in official competitions in youth sports cannot place any logos of online betting websites, alcohol companies and tobacco companies on their uniforms.
