Kanon Gaming, a Malta-based online casino operator, has seen a reducted fine from the Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA) reduced to SEK 4.8m (€435,382).
The company was initially fined SEK 7m in June 2024 for breaching duty of care rules, but the regulator lowered the penalty after reviewing the case and acknowledging Kanon Gaming’s cooperation.
The sanction related to failures in responsible gambling practices, with Swedish law requiring prompt intervention when players show signs of risky gambling. The SGA concluded that Kanon Gaming did not meet these requirements, and that shortcomings persisted for a significant period.
The affected platforms included casinoepic.se, casinogami.se, frejacasino.se, and lokecasino.se, which are now subject to closer monitoring. The Administrative Court upheld both the regulator’s warning and the financial sanction.
A key issue was the lack of stricter safeguards for players aged 18-24, who face higher risks of gambling-related harm. Kanon Gaming reportedly applied the same duty of care measures to all players over 18, which the SGA viewed as a serious failing.
Despite this, the operator’s willingness to engage with regulators and implement corrective measures during the investigation led to a quicker resolution and a reduced fine.
Just last week, the SGA penalised three gaming software suppliers, while earlier in the year Newera Frozen PTE Limited and Aprodi Limited were fined for promoting gambling through streaming platforms like YouTube and Twitch.
Other companies, including Bigskin Trading, Gamevio Ltd, and Santeda International, have also been targeted, reflecting the regulator’s firm stance on enforcing duty of care obligations.
