Romanin mayors demand new legislation for gambling ban

Number of Romanian mayors want to eliminate gambling and are planning to ban casinos fully.

The recent law changed gambling legislation across the Romania. Previously, companies only needed a national license to open a casino. Now these operators must obtain a local permit from the municipality.

The mayor of Slatina recently sparked this current political movement. He announced bold plans to remove all casinos from his city. On February 26, Vaslui Mayor Lucian Braniste joined the growing coalition and seeks a complete ban on casinos in Vaslui.

Mayors cannot act entirely alone, even though this is a strong political momentum. Local councils have decisive votes in each community. Therefore, the outcome depends solely on the elected board members.

Gambling operators generate significant revenues and represent major economic benefits at the local level. Thus, operators will fiercely defend their established presence in Romanian cities. The industry will not retreat without organizing a mass resistance campaign.
