Alberta launches regulated iGaming market with 29 operators

Alberta announces the end of three-month transition period, which required unlicensed gambling sites to stop accepting bets from October 13.

With the transition period ending, 29 operators and 50 brands had received approval.

Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) will monitor compliance and take enforcement action against unlicensed operators that continue serving local players, including those still awaiting approval. The Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) has published a list of approved operators on its website.

AiGC CEO Dan Keene said:

Alberta’s regulated igaming market exists to protect Albertans.

Alberta became the next Canadian province to start moving towards legalizing its private casino industry after Ontario pushed ahead with the legalization in April 2022. According to the newly adopted regulation, all operators who were active before Ontario’s establishment were compelled to stop working by October 31 of the same year.

At earlier occasions, the Alberta government suggested that illegal operators comprised up to 70% of all similar activity in the province.
