Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro has rejected the outcome of the October 25 presidential election, announcing plans to challenge Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s victory in court. The dispute centres on a Supreme Court decision to extend voting hours by two hours following reported problems with voter transportation.
Lula won a fourth, non-consecutive presidential term with approximately 51.8% of the vote, defeating Bolsonaro, who received 48.2%.
Flávio Bolsonaro stated he would engage his legal team to contest the electoral outcome. He disputed the extension of hours for voting made by the Supreme Court Justice, Cristiano Zanin, claiming that it influenced the elections negatively.
This decision came after information regarding issues in transport and entry to polling stations had been released. Despite this, his campaign had previously filed a request to extend voting hours in several municipalities.
As reported by Reuters, analysts indicate that there are great challenges on Bolsonaro’s way to achieving such reexamination of elections, especially considering how far Lula is ahead of him in the election.
The Brazilian electoral board announced that Lula won the second round of elections and claimed victory. Speaking to his supporters in São Paulo, Lula admitted that the Brazilian society is divided and that he would be there for them all.
The financial markets reacted unfavorably to the outcomes reflecting the fears of the investors regarding Brazil’s fiscal development and economic policies of the upcoming Lula administration.
Bolsonaro’s challenges have only added a political uncertainty for Brazil that is experiencing economic and regulatory challenges as well. In regard to the gambling sector in Brazil, the political confrontations come at a time of considerable uncertainty about the future of the betting industry.
The new term of Lula will start after the opposition rises in Congress which is likely to make it difficult to push through legislation and create a consistent regulatory framework.
The way how the legal dispute of Flavio Bolsonaro will unfold may not determine the gambling policy, but the general political situation may have an effect on the situation in terms of regulation in the gambling sector for operators and investors in the country.
