On May 11 Genius Sports filed a lawsuit against SportsCastr claiming they have infringed on patents associated with real-time graphics and interactive overlays used during live broadcasts of sporting events.
The lawsuit was filed in the Southern District of New York. At issue are three patents originally created by Second Spectrum, which Genius Sports purchased in 2021.
The patents at issue involve technology that PANDA Interactive uses in their “PANDA Studio” software, which overlays live video footage of sporting events with live analytical data, graphics, and interactive components.
Genius Sports is seeking a permanent injunction, treble damages for alleged willful infringement, and reimbursement for legal expenses. Kirkland & Ellis will be representing Genius Sports in this lawsuit.
This lawsuit is just one more chapter in a long-running legal dispute between the two companies that has been going on for some time.
In 2023 SportsCastr filed a similar lawsuit against Genius Sports and Sportradar regarding these same patents; a settlement was reached in February 2026 where both sides agreed to drop all of their claims against each other.
