SportyBet faces court setback as N900m dispute remains unresolved

SportyBet Nigeria brought legal action against several customers after blocking their accounts in 2024, alleging they had manipulated the platform to obtain significant payouts.

The affected users, who claim they are owed more than N900 million in winnings, denied the accusations and took their case to social media, seeking public support. With no resolution reached, SportyBet escalated the matter to court.

The company requested an ex parte order to restrict the customers from speaking publicly and accused them of financial misconduct, also seeking N50 million in damages.

In its filing, SportyBet asked the court to bar the customers from making further statements or posting about the dispute online, while maintaining its allegations of misconduct and pursuing financial compensation.

However, the court dismissed the claims, finding that the operator failed to provide sufficient evidence. The judge ruled that “the claimant is not entitled to any of the reliefs… This suit is dismissed.”

Despite alleging system manipulation, SportyBet did not present evidence to substantiate the claim. Court records also indicated that the company did not pursue arguments related to a cyberattack, instead relying on defamation claims that were not proven.

As a result, the dispute over the reported N900 million in winnings remains unresolved.
