Denmark blocks 98 unlicensed gambling websites

The Danish Gambling Authority (Spillemyndigheden) received an approval from the court to block 98 websites that provide unlicensed and illegal gambling offers to the players in the country.

The most significant website on the list is the Polymarket, which is gaining more restrictions in European market recently.

Spillemyndigheden received the official approval from the Frederiksberg court to block access to the websites. Before the court handling the case, the regulator sent a notice to the operators with the opportunity to stop unlicensed actions. If they fail to do so, the authority can seek judicial approval for a DNS block.

The regulator highlighted, that the websites were designed specifically or the danish market, including Danish-language content, the use of Danish kroner and the Danish flag, local payment options and customer support in Danish.

According to the Danish Gambling Authority, only those operators that have received a proper license are permitted to operate games of chance in the territory of Denmark. Licensed companies will display the mark of the gambling license, but before using a gambling service, customers may conveniently check the official list of the gambling regulator.

The authority also warns that the illegal establishments may easily switch to other domains, making it necessary for customers to ascertain whether the website is legitimate.

The recent action made 870 websites banned by the authorities in Denmark. DNS blocking is one of the key actions exerted by the authorities against unfair gaming, yet the operators may shift to new sites in a matter of seconds.

The inclusion of Polymarket also raises the issue of increased attention paid by the regulators to prediction markets in Europe with Denmark considering the possibility of providing gambling opportunities to its customers without proper authorization actually.
