ESPN Bet partners with Monumental Sports for market access

Penn Entertainment is set to launch ESPN Bet in Washington, DC, after securing market access through a new partnership with Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE).

The long-term agreement, effective immediately, enables ESPN Bet to join other established online operators in DC, such as BetMGM, FanDuel, Caesars, Fanatics, and DraftKings.

As announced in a January 14 statement, ESPN Bet will also become a sports betting partner for Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE). MSE owns the NHL’s Washington Capitals, the NBA’s Washington Wizards, and the WNBA’s Washington Mystics, as well as several multi-purpose venues.

Under the agreement, ESPN Bet and MSE will collaborate to enhance the fan experience through an integrated marketing partnership. This includes multi-channel initiatives such as in-arena promotions and media features, including broadcasts on the Monumental Sports Network (MNMT).

Additionally, Penn and ESPN Bet will gain IP rights for the Capitals, Wizards, and Mystics, which will extend across ESPN Bet and the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. The marketing strategy also involves in-arena signage, out-of-home advertising, a commercial schedule on MNMT, as well as hospitality and experiential offerings.

Penn Entertainment CTO Aaron LaBerge stated that the deal aligns with the strategy to expand ESPN Bet’s presence across the US.

Launched in November 2023, ESPN Bet is now active in 19 states, including Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. With DC, the brand marks its entry into its 20th state.

Aaron LaBerge, chief technology officer at Penn Entertainment, mentioned:

This deal expands our footprint in the region. It further connects ESPN Bet with one of America’s most passionate sports communities. Our presence alongside the Capitals, Wizards and Mystics positions ESPN Bet at the centre of the action where sports, technology, and fan experience converge.

Jim Van Stone, president of business operations and chief commercial officer at MSE, added:

This partnership furthers our collective commitment to offering fans unique, cutting-edge experiences that reflect the future of sports entertainment, with ESPN Bet’s innovative platform adding a new layer of engagement for our fans, both inside and outside the arena.

This partnership is still pending regulatory approval in Washington, DC.
