The National Liberal Party (PNL), Romania’s junior ruling party, has set the elimination of gambling advertising as a key legislative priority for the autumn 2024 parliamentary session.
The proposal, listed by the PNL parliamentary group as the sixth of eleven priorities, aims to address the widespread influence of gambling advertising, especially in sports.
Currently, gambling advertising is only allowed on television between 11pm and 6am and during live sports events. There are no restrictions on gambling advertising online, while outdoor advertising has recently faced some space restrictions.
Despite these existing regulations, the gambling industry remains a significant sponsor of Romanian sports, especially in Liga 1, where 14 out of 16 teams have betting companies as their main sponsors.
The PNL has not yet provided specific details about the proposed legislation, but the issue is becoming increasingly pressing. Several legislative proposals concerning the gambling industry are currently stuck in parliamentary committees.
Earlier this year, parliament passed a law banning slot machines in Romanian cities with fewer than 15,000 inhabitants.
